Potentially The New Cat – First Open Thread 31 July 2021

Hi Cats,

As you can see I have created a copy of the Cat for you to continue to bicker, argue and occasionally make a reasonable point.

I do hope a solution is found with the original Cat but just in case Sinc doesn’t want to transfer the site to a new generation I have built a replica before the closure so we can migrate as many of the community across as possible.

Programming Note: I rushed out the site so there will be bugs. I can get them fixed but did not want perfection to get in the way for progress.

Community Note: Please let as many cats know of the new blog as soon as possible so we can capture the magic of the original. In particular would love for the original posters to continue their great work here.

Ideological Note: I am an infrequent poster but long time reader of the Cat. The discussions there have been a huge part of my own ideological growth on many issues. In particular free speech is key for me so will have a very similar light touch to the original Cat, potentially adopting my one policy on an earlier forum I built: “No D***heads” which is subjective but surprisingly easy to implement.

Website Note: I will run the Cat as close to possible as the original because I don’t believe in re-inventing the wheel. However if the community so wants I am happy to make changes to improve the experience so if you have any ideas let me know. For anything specific hit me up at the contact form, else go nuts in the comments.

In Qld, the Public Health and Other Legislation (Further Extension of Expiring Provisions) Amendment Bill 2021 extends a range of emergency measures, including the extraordinary powers of the Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young.

The powers include the ability to impose restrictions on the free movement of citizens, their ability to travel, conduct a business, attend school, church or sport, as well as the power to issue mandates on mask wearing, social distancing rules, the numbers of persons who can gather at any one time, border closures, area lockdowns and quarantine mandates.

The Bill also extends emergency measures, and creates new ones.

It will only require an amendment will allow the sharing of vaccination data and allow authorised persons, which will be such a wide definition as to include my dog, to enquire and if necessary compel you to display your vaccination status. Failure to do so will be an offence.

Struth, linking to Facebook is useless for those who don’t join Facebook.

Maybe a short summary of what is in the link would help discussion flow.

I’ve just returned from Redfern/Surrey Hills. Fixed one son’s internet problems with a Telstra mini-modem I purchased for $50 in Coles. It has 4GB on it. He can top it up after that. It seems to have settled him down, along with the Suchi I brought for lunch.

Had a walk with my other son living in that area inner-city area. We did social distancing and sat for quite a while having a chat. On the way we walked by a decrepit old denizen of the area puffing his fag as he was walking along. He blew it straight into my face. For the first time ever it made me wish I was wearing a facemask as the smoke went into my nose and lungs. Wouldn’t have stopped any virus but might have filtered the TB bascillus and smoke particles.

Lucky I’ve had my BCG innoculation vs TB years ago. It is long-lasting. Anyway, when I was fifteen (age up to 17) I worked as a doctor’s helper and receptionist out West. Careful sterilizing that lot, Lizzie, he said to me casually, as I did the usual part of my job. It’s got live TB on it. So I probably was exposed to that long ago 🙂

The fines are from July 14th to July 18th. I have the Service NSW app. All the fines have been on there for 2 weeks. I receive multiple texts about Covid lockdowns, and other NSW government announcements. I got one a month before my rego was due. Now, it seems to me that the government could organise a text as soon as fine is processed by them. You know, fine received, Waitara, 46 in a 40 school zone, 248pm 14th July, Rego etc. It just gives you a heads up and allows you to modify your behaviour. Basically, the roads are so empty it is a bit easy to speed becuase you almost have the Pacific Hwy to yourself.. Anyway, 820 bucks………….

…Your ex-friend was right. There are no valid arguments for being anti-vaccination.
    ***************
Vicki admits to “vaccine scepticism”, commonly used to describe doubts about COVID vaccine. It doesn’t mean necessarily being “anti” even those vaccines, let alone all vaccines – often it just means being against compulsion to take any of those vaccines, or personal reluctance to get any of them, or both.
    Someone labels her an “anti-vaxer”.
So Terry Pedersen drops in for one of his trademark drive-by sneers.
So is Terry saying there’s no excuse for being “sceptical” in any sense, e.g. as I’ve outlined above, of COVID vaccines? Or is he leaping to the conclusion, on the basis of a reported accusation, that Vicki is “anti” all vaccines?
Either way it’s a first class display of wrongology.

From what I understand, at least in Australia, Medicare has your vaccine records. You get the Medicare app on your smartphone to generate a Covid vaccine only report in a PDF type image after you have had the 2nd shot. You then ask the Medicare app to stick it in your Apple or android wallets. A business wants to see it, you can flash the image, but it don’t give them access to anything else as it is just a verified image. The business can’t get any data on you.

I have been quite upset about my second son’s gallopping internet bill which I pay. Neither of us can work out what is happening so we’ve closed it down to start again with a Telstra prepay mini-modem purchased at Coles. He can’t be without internet during this lockdown. It wasn’t so much the money even, though it had reach $1,300 by the closure time. It was the sense of injustice at being continuously charged in large amounts for something you didn’t even realise was happening.

That son has bipolar disorder, thus is rather prone to paranoia, and takes it badly. He thinks they have a personal vendetta against him. I’ve had a job persuading him it is just some glitch and that if we have to Hairy and I will either pay it or take it to the Ombudsman for him. Really something we could all do without during a lockdown.

Okay, tell that to Fed Ex, UPS, Deutsche Post, Amazon and any other organization with a logistics component. Even the firms you mentioned, I bet they hire from the military.

What’s your point anyway? If you think our military is useless, it doesn’t mean the government thinks the same thing, so you argument is stupid…. no surprise there.

Entropy, what if a person doesn’t have a phone?

you probably don’t go clubbing then.

Actually it is interesting how much teh authoritehs assume about people. I tried to get my father in law to finally buy an iPhone but being the scabby old Scotsman he is, he went with a $49 Chinese android thing that no doubt is reporting his activities to an extremely bored Chinese spy.

Yes that’s right Billy, the people had been dumbed down so much and had not a clue about what freedom even was anymore that they couldn’t tell the difference between a tracking app and a “permission passport.”
Can you believe they had given religion away, …we now know that doesn’t happen, but they thought that it could, but they’d actually replaced Christianity with the religion of government, which we call communism, Billy.
No it’s not bullshit Billy, although I grant you it’s hard to believe, but we only know this now looking back on History.
Let’s make sure we don’t repeat it.
Because they also had history to learn from but didn’t.
The world fell into darkness and evil chaos for centuries, and prior to that the western civilisation was a gleaming light of freedom, wealth and security.
No other civilisation came close for hundreds of years.

Was he illogical in terms what Rambler mentioned (and not what his generals said about him). But equally, when have subordinates ever spoken well about the boss – especially when things are turning to shit. Like it’s all his fault and not ours. That’s never happened ever never before and after Hitler.

I’m procrastinating on YouTube watching an African-American dude ‘react’ to an Adam Calhoun music video (yes, there are better things I could be doing with my time, but that’s another story), when he explains the whole saggy/baggy pants thing which was (still is?) popular in certain communities: Apparently it originated in jail. When you were *ahem* ‘claimed’ by a dude, you sagged your pants as a signal to others you were no longer ‘available.’ This bloke didn’t explain how that signalling came to be transferred to the outside world, but if it is true … Huh.

ABC review into Luna Park documentary

    Troy Bramston
    SENIOR WRITER
    @TroyBramston
    21 minutes ago August 2, 2021

The ABC has commissioned an external review into its widely criticised Luna Park ghost train fire documentary that implicated former NSW premier Neville Wran in a cover-up of the police investigation, accused him of socialising with Abe Saffron and influencing the tender process for the amusement park.

The ABC board initiated the review following complaints concerning the program by former ABC chairman and managing director David Hill, former NSW premiers Bob Carr and Barrie Unsworth, former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and others.

The ABC’s audience and consumer affairs division dismissed a formal complaint by Milton Cockburn, a former editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, and an adviser to Wran, in June. This response, by division head Kirstin McLiesh, is also being reviewed.

ABC managing director David Anderson was instructed to initiate the independent review of the documentary, reported by Caro Meldrum-Hanna and Patrick Begley. It is being undertaken by investigative journalist Chris Masters and Sydney University professor Rodney Tiffen.

The board-ordered review comes after a bruising Senate estimates hearing where editorial director Craig McMurtrie and Mr Anderson were grilled about the attacks on Wran’s character. Sally Jackson, a spokeswoman for the ABC, has repeatedly said the ABC “fully supports” Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire.

In his formal complaint, Mr Cockburn savaged the documentary’s journalistic integrity and credibility, and said it breached ABC editorial policies to be “accurate”, “fair” and “honest” by making unsubstantiated claims about Wran.

The ABC alleged Wran had a social relationship with Saffron, a notorious criminal underworld figure. It relied on Rosemary Opitz, a former Saffron employee, to claim the crime boss and premier were “pally” and had drinks together. No other witness corroborated this.

Former policeman Paul Egge alleged Wran conspired with High Court judge Lionel Murphy to ensure the Luna Park lease went to a Saffron front company, but his claim was found to be without credibility by a royal commission and a parliamentary commission. The ABC did not produce any tapes, transcripts or other police testimony to corroborate this allegation.

The ABC response to Mr Cockburn rejected his complaints made with reference to editorial policies. The ABC insisted the documentary made allegations rather than facts, and it was up to the audience to determine whether they were credible or not. “We are satisfied the program complied with the ABC’s editorial standards for accuracy,” it said.

Mr Hill, who ran the ABC from 1986 to 1995, and previously worked for Wran, said the documentary was “sloppy journalism”, clearly breached editorial policies and should never have been broadcast.

Warwick, this might be worth a look:

TE, I’m just throwing some caution out there. I splashed out for their guff about 18 months ago after I got a couple of quick fines. Unfortunately at that time, the info they sent out was years out of date. Some of it was also along the lines of challenging the constitutional validity of the entity to actually issue fines. A lot of ducks needed to line up. It seemed to me easier just to suck it up and pay the fines. I guess if someone faffed them around long enough with challenges they might just write the fine off.

I challenged them about their dated info and got no reply. I guess it might have been updated since though.
