Potentially The New Cat – First Open Thread 31 July 2021

Hi Cats,

As you can see I have created a copy of the Cat for you to continue to bicker, argue and occasionally make a reasonable point.

I do hope a solution is found with the original Cat but just in case Sinc doesn’t want to transfer the site to a new generation I have built a replica before the closure so we can migrate as many of the community across as possible.

Programming Note: I rushed out the site so there will be bugs. I can get them fixed but did not want perfection to get in the way for progress.

Community Note: Please let as many cats know of the new blog as soon as possible so we can capture the magic of the original. In particular would love for the original posters to continue their great work here.

Ideological Note: I am an infrequent poster but long time reader of the Cat. The discussions there have been a huge part of my own ideological growth on many issues. In particular free speech is key for me so will have a very similar light touch to the original Cat, potentially adopting my one policy on an earlier forum I built: “No D***heads” which is subjective but surprisingly easy to implement.

Website Note: I will run the Cat as close to possible as the original because I don’t believe in re-inventing the wheel. However if the community so wants I am happy to make changes to improve the experience so if you have any ideas let me know. For anything specific hit me up at the contact form, else go nuts in the comments.

The problem with the ‘let it all run free’ model is that they underestimate the manic and inexhaustible nature of mentally ill or just ratbag commenters, including those who are on ice.

They will go on and on, day and night, filling the pages with putrid spam, and that’s what it is.

It becomes their personal space to vent whatever nonsense is currently infesting their heads.

Like srr in 2016, after a while you had to wade through pages of it to find anything else. Not to mention that she accused all of us of being spies bought by the UN. It became a badge of honour. 🙂 Sinc had to ban her.

I daresay that Adam is mulling these issues, in between having a life.

Johanna – Currawongs follow the berries and fruit. There’re Port Jackson figs in two of the adjacent neighbours’ yards, and more of them further up the street. They feast on the figs, which are just the right size for a currawong to swallow. The additional boost they get from us are privets. I used to have a 5m high privet in my yard, before I had friendly currawongs. In the season the currawongs would be festooned all over it like Christmas decorations. I got it cut down eventually as I became allergic to privet pollen due to a flu infection.

Only a long time later did I manage to befriend any currawongs. Basically I’m a fig tree to them. They go around the fig trees as they come into fruit, strip them, them move to the next one. Only the Cafe Bruce “fig tree” bears meat-figs all year round. Which the currawongs rather like. Almost all of them accept it from my hand, which is a tribute to the flexibility and learning ability of wild creatures.

They’re spreading out to breed now, and will mostly be gone until the kids are large enough to need extra food sources, which is about December. Then they go away again in March-May to feast on berries. I get them twice a year, such is the pulse of currawong music.

    The Covid Outbreak in NSW

    1/

From Sky News (June 23 2021)

NSW Government’s guidelines for air crew transportation to blame for COVID outbreak

A failure by the New South Wales Government to implement provisions requiring drivers of air crew to be vaccinated and to wear face masks is to blame for the state’s unfolding coronavirus crisis, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

This is negligence on the part of the NSW government headed by Gladly Bearly. The issue had been brought to the notice of the government before the limo driver incident that set off this lockdown. Due to the government’s incompetence, the residents of the biggest city in the country are in lockdown, severe restrictions, invasion of residents rights and privacy.

How do we have such a situation? This is supposed to a Liberal Government. The Premier is supposed to be from a heritage that should understand what freedom means. She used that ancestry to score points before the election.

    Armenian genocide

At the height of World War I, the Young Turk government of the Ottoman Empire suspected its Armenian population of harbouring sympathy for the Russian enemy. Armenians serving in the Ottoman army were taken into camps and killed, as were Armenian political leaders and intellectuals. The mass of the population were rounded up and marched off to concentration camps, where many of them died of hunger, thirst or disease. In 1920–3, when the Ottoman Empire invaded parts of Armenia, Armenians were subject to further mass killings.

It is estimated that up to 1.5 million out of a population of 2.5 million Armenians died. As genocide is defined as a purposeful extermination of an entire people or race, the mass killing of Armenians has been widely accepted as a genocidal act (whose denial became punishable by law in France).

If the government has implemented the provisions of those employees complying with the strict rules, limo driver would have tested negative, and NSW would have continued on its way.

“Like srr in 2016, after a while you had to wade through pages of it to find anything else. Not to mention that she accused all of us of being spies bought by the UN. ”

First, there is one of me, I have no socks, no gang of friends I’d call to my aid the way others touch up ‘friends’ for a gang attack, so of course, when I post a bit of news, and one, two, three & more hit me with bullshit claims to “prove” what they can read for themselves and other such school yard bullying shit, the INTENDED ‘look’, if I counter all the false claims by different posters is that ‘my topics are all about me’, and every half experienced net head knows that.
Yet if I don’t counter them, they remain believed lies, because I didn’t answer them.
It’s a lose, lose, situation for me that I wouldn’t play IF it was, ‘all about me’, but it is NOT, and you all know it, which is why you work so hard to make it seem so.

And here I am yet again explaining the old internet bullying game, to some of the most expert net heads.
    Why?
There may be one youngster who’s stumbled in and wants to learn this game of Social Engineering. After all, it was for Social Engineering that the powers that be made world wide internet access not only available but now even a requirement for even the poorest of people to function in society.

And NO, johanna, I didn’t, “accused all of us of being spies bought by the UN.”, I did however describe a number of different sorts of professional forum workers & how & why they did the things they do on the Net.
Not my fault so many took such great offence at recognising themselves in those descriptions.

My neighbour showed me some footage today about a demonstration in Denmark which was uploaded to Telegram. Apparently, some Covid tightening legislation was before their parliament and people stood outside the building for 9 days banging pots and pans. The legislation was defeated. One girl who was talking on camera was almost in tears of joy. I wish I knew the details.

Not one word in the media. I don’t think it was even covered there. I did ask for a link but haven’t received it yet and I’m not on Telegram in any case.

There is a big cul-de-sac off the Rabbit Hole called:

Think of it as a large service centre/truck stop/rest area on a major USA interstate highway, or the Hume Highway etc. It has all the food, drink, drugs, hookers, poker machines, accomodation; a self-contained world with the bread and circusues.

Some travellers never leave. It is a destination, not a way point.

Taliban commander who led attack on Afghan city was freed last year

By Alan Cullison and Saeed Shah

The Taliban commander overseeing an assault on the key southern city of Lashkargah is one of 5000 former prisoners released by the Afghan government last year under pressure from the US, Afghan and Western officials say.

The commander, Mawlavi Talib, is one of thousands of former prisoners freed to further peace talks who have returned to the battlefield to join the Taliban onslaught against cities around the country, Afghan officials say. The presence of the Taliban fighters is a fresh strain in relations between Washington and Kabul, as the US-backed government struggles to fend off Taliban attacks throughout the country.

Afghan officials said fierce fighting was continuing on Wednesday in Lashkargah, the provincial capital of Helmand province, after heavy US airstrikes and a counter-attack by US-trained Afghan commandos overnight. Under Talib’s command, hundreds of Taliban have pushed towards the city centre over the past week. On Tuesday they launched an attack on Lashkargah’s prison in a bid to release more inmates and recruit them into the fight.

Talib, the Taliban’s “shadow” deputy governor of Helmand province, was arrested last year.

The fighting in Lashkargah is part of a wider countrywide Taliban offensive that had captured half of the country’s remote districts by last month and now threatens provincial capitals. On Tuesday, the government said that its commandos launched a counter-attack in the western city of Herat, whose defences were teetering. Taliban forces last month pierced defences in Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second largest city, but government forces were holding steady there.”

I don’t want to be at Adam’s Cat site during its present meltdown. Nor does Cassie.

If it comes down to a choice where there is some moderation to no or ineffective moderation I would prefer to come here. I have always had a certain amount of time and patience for M0nty. As I am under pressure from Hairy to cease blogging altogether my feelings may not matter much in the event, because I may be on no blog at all. He thinks I cop so much unfair shit on the Cat that it is a pain in the butt for him and for me. He’s probably right.

I’ve really appreciated the efforts that all people – Dot, Dover, Nilk, Adam, and now M0nts and likely others – have put into keeping the spirit of the old Cat alive.

    Hope someone succeeds.

Never thought the day would come when my distaste for Nazis who stink up discussion fora (e.g. that pathetic, crazy Goebbels Whisperer person) would be less than my distaste for a massively entitled tyrant who will apparently go to any lengths to get a so-called libertarian website to bend to her will (i.e. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Beare)!

NSW Police Minister David Elliot has just told Alan Jones that his own mother has dementia, he is the only person that his mother recognises, she lives only a few hundred yards from his house, and he has not seen his mother for six weeks.

    Shameful.

Is this person seeking approval? Sympathy?

    That poor old lady.

I think he’s trying to convey how much of a Covid “hero” he is.
