General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American. The Powell Family

Colin Powell had multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that severely depresses the immune system. He’d had 2 vaccination shots, but even if he’d had a 3rd booster shot it’s unlikely that it would have saved him.

Looking through the morning funnies I came across this.

Came to Oz in ’86 and had a drive north for my first holiday in ’87. This was anchored off Townsville. It had been a failed business venture and was due to head off elsewhere so they were having a fire sale. Cheap as chips for 4 days so the missus said yes and off we went. Just brilliant. Pristine reef, good accom, excellent food and an introduction to the culture of safety. If you were going off for  a snorkel there was a small snorkelling area roped off. 2 “lifeguards” monitoring all the time. Just slipped under the rope and 100m to the edge of the reef where the true wonders of the GBR began. Better than anything you see on TV and lifeguards leap into the dinghy and chase after you. Free trip back to the hotel after amazing viewing was over and a stern talking to, duly ignored.

4 days of that, wonderful I honestly don’t know how such a wonderful experience can fail. Over the years I came to learn that not many people are that bothered or capable of doing the reef activities and it would indeed be hazardous for the less athletic. The only time I got scared was when an enormous barracuda appeared at the drop off and cruised lazily past. Those teeth!!. Then a shoal of them, much smaller but equally evil in appearance, prompted me to get back on the reef.

All too soon it was over and back in Townsville I discovered my car had been robbed of every item of value (official car park) and an awakening that maybe Oz was not actually as described in all the adverts. 2 memorable years in Tville some years later, the good old days when it was still a bit wild.

    ********************************************

No. If Powell had been unvaxxed he would still have died of complications from COVID-19 as reported, but maybe his death would have come more quickly.

There is no cure for multiple myeloma, just remission and then ongoing chemotherapy “maintenance”. The patient’s immune system is badly compromised, such that even the mildest of infections quickly lead to hospitalisation, most often in intensive care. So, even fully vaxxed (and with or without the 3rd booster shot) it was probably inevitable that COVID would overwhelm Powell’s system and cause his death.

Keep it simple. For instance in 2020 human emissions of CO2 fell by 30%. Did CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere fall; nope, they didn’t change. Plus several papers by atmospheric physicists came out in 2020 showing nature is responsible for the increase in CO2.

It’s even worse with Teh Hole in Teh Ozone Layer – despite ever increasing concentrations of CFCs, the hole manages to shrink to nothing at times, the climate zealots patting themselves on the back trying to take credit via the Montreal Protocol.

“since 1991, the linear [downward] trend observed during the 1980s has not continued, but rather total column* ozone has been almost constant …”

BRAZIL, ROCINHA: I’ve experienced my fair share of wild places on this planet, but nothing, and I repeat N O T H I N G, comes even close to Rio De Janeiro’s biggest favela; Rocinha. In fact, it is so wild, that making a video in my usual style, wandering around aimlessly with no clear goal other than just talking to strangers, is impossible. I am not going to elaborate further as to why (if I did, you guys simply wouldn’t believe me anyway). Thus, my only option to really convey anything about this intriguing favela and the people who live there to you guys, was to sit down for a hair-cut video. After walking around for a while with my friend Henry looking for a barber, we spotted a pretty cool hole in the wall type of place. There was only one barber working there but plenty of customers waiting for a trim. It was clearly a popular shop! After ensuring the people who control said street that I was actually there only to film myself getting a hair-cut, and that I loved weapons too (the Texas pork o’clock helicopter vid went down well and was hence instrumental in said endeavor), I was given permission to film the barber adventure. A pretty entertaining half hour in the barbershop ensued…..

They assembled in their thousands. Trump wound them up with a typically inflammatory address, culminating in a call to march on the Capitol.

The mob proceeded to besiege and break into the home of US democracy. They surged through the corridors, threatening to hang Pence and the Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

Several security guards were killed …

If he goes to Glasgow, promising ‘net zero’, it must be conditional on either having obtained or obtaining such a bi-partisan agreement from Labor, and indeed the coalition parties themselves, to a rapid rolling out of nuclear power stations in Australia.

It is time for everybody to put their proverbial money – and far more importantly, a future of reliable, plentiful and (relatively) cheap energy for Australian businesses and Australian consumers – where their mouths are.
