Potentially The New Cat – First Open Thread 31 July 2021

Hi Cats,

As you can see I have created a copy of the Cat for you to continue to bicker, argue and occasionally make a reasonable point.

I do hope a solution is found with the original Cat but just in case Sinc doesn’t want to transfer the site to a new generation I have built a replica before the closure so we can migrate as many of the community across as possible.

Programming Note: I rushed out the site so there will be bugs. I can get them fixed but did not want perfection to get in the way for progress.

Community Note: Please let as many cats know of the new blog as soon as possible so we can capture the magic of the original. In particular would love for the original posters to continue their great work here.

Ideological Note: I am an infrequent poster but long time reader of the Cat. The discussions there have been a huge part of my own ideological growth on many issues. In particular free speech is key for me so will have a very similar light touch to the original Cat, potentially adopting my one policy on an earlier forum I built: “No D***heads” which is subjective but surprisingly easy to implement.

Website Note: I will run the Cat as close to possible as the original because I don’t believe in re-inventing the wheel. However if the community so wants I am happy to make changes to improve the experience so if you have any ideas let me know. For anything specific hit me up at the contact form, else go nuts in the comments.

Makka, you insert html commands by inserting them between the sign for less than and the sign for greater than, which don’t print in the usual way but act as brackets to enclose the html instructions. The second thing to know is that you enclose the text you want processed between two such instructions, the first switches it on, and the second switches it off. The second is the same instruction as the first with a forward slash in front of it and no space.

For italics, the instruction is (em) and off is (/em),
For bold the instruction is (strong) and off is (/strong)
For blockquotes the instruction is (blockquote) and off is (/blockquote).

The above three lines require to have ‘(‘ replaced by the less than sign and ‘)’ replaced by the greater than sign.
    Thus strong> for bold .

What about the HTML for links? – there is some groovy string that you use but I forget it. This stuff, like all IT, bores me rigid. No offence meant to people who enjoy it or do it professionally. The single most frustrating thing I was involved in during my pleasingly short career was a computer migration. It ended up in the courts (I had resigned and was out of contact on a motorbike in the outback – not by design although it was probably not a bad idea). No idea how it ended up.

Just google href for the instruction for linking. You need to give it two things, the url (i.e. web address, starting off http…) and also the piece of text you want to appear as the link. Tom is going to have a lot of typing to do if the tabs for doing it automatically aren’t here by four a.m. next.

    Hi Guys,

Just a little update which I will put in here as the other thread is a ghost town 🙂

Updates are underway. Apologies for the issues to date but weekends are rather busy with kids sports for me, so would of preferred Sinc pulled the plug on a Tuesday.

I am making changes on a test site so that I can keep this one live and hopefully avoid unwanted side effects (like death with a vaccine).

    Changes in progress:

    – Comments to appear immediately
    – Redirection after comments back to the “Leave a reply” section
    – Basic HTML options for those soon to be tech savvy people
    – Remember my details added back to the site (this caused the great unmasking so no promises)
    – Reply to option on comments. It will post linearly still but will allow specific conversations to remain clear (or easy to avoid as some have suggested).

Lastly I would love to get the old bloggers to return so if you have contact with them feel free to reach out and let them know that we miss them and want them back. Additionally any of the regular Cats who have something worthy of its own thread is welcome to submit something to be published. If the community like it they can become a regular contributor much like C.L did on the original.

Also thanks everyone for the kind words, I was really unsure how this enterprise would be received and I am glad that it already has a similar vibe to the original.

P.S – I maaged to archive the original cat before Jacques pulls the plug, I am not sure if its worth republishing it in some form, but its not completely lost at this stage (I have not verified the data fully but it seemed to be good as well as insanely massive).
