    Makka,

New laws will have to be written to deal with discrimination, privacy, workers comp and also to downgrade some citizens’ rights.  I can’t see the govt getting any of that through the Senate.  While the Liars would have tried to bring it in if they were sitting on the Treasury Benches, but support the SFLs from Opposition on that stuff?  No.  They’ll not agree and will want the government to wear all of the coming sh1t, and they will.

Backpackers come in waves a bit here- one year was solid Estonian, then the French rose up, Germans too.

Spanish and Dutch have been here since December. In fairness, I had one good value Dutchie who I put on a tractor through hay season. Spanish are lazy and don’t take any responsibility (that’s a broad generalization based on a very small sample- ie racism, but what the hey).

Maybe the smart kids got out of the eastern states, and thank my lucky stars too, because it’s bordering on desperation in the Margaret River region for winter pruning hands.

I disagree Bear, for a start there hasn’t  been an election in either Victoria or NSW since the beginning of the Rona rort.  This evening  I had my weekly zoom call with my sister, my brother-in-law, my nephews and their respective partners and wives.  My sister is very conservative, very right-wing…..she now loathes the Liberals with a visceral passion.  She’s said she’s going to split her vote in the senate between the Lib Dems and One Nation.  She will write  Donald Trump on her lower house ballot paper.  My nephews, one quite libertarian and one a Liberal party member, have said that they will now both vote Lib Dems.

The anger is real and palpable.  I actually feel physically sick when I now think of the Liberal party.

What’s more, in imposing curfews on the unlucky inhabitants of certain local government areas, Gladdie even admitted that they are not sure if it has any effect. But, they’re doing it anyway, with thousands of dollars of fines in the offing for those who are caught moving around at night or breathing fresh air under any circumstances other than those approved by the Gubbmint. Some names named…

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/aug/21/delta-is-different-inside-gladys-berejiklians-powerful-crisis-cabinet
From the beginning of the pandemic, NSW’s crisis cabinet has met – initially at 8am but now more often in the afternoon – to discuss the unfolding coronavirus caseload in NSW and the steps needed to combat the spread and keep the state operating.
It’s an immensely powerful body that in normal circumstances would not be tolerated in a democracy.

As one participant said: “We make decisions there that would take 18 months under normal circumstances and would require legislation through parliament. We’re taking decisions that curtail people’s freedoms or pay out millions in an afternoon.”
The meeting takes place a few times a week, online. It usually begins with a briefing by health officials led by Dr Kerry Chant, the chief health officer, and more recently, a briefing on the ongoing vaccination effort by deputy secretary of NSW Health, Susan Pearce.
More often than not there’s an update on the hospital capacity, and more recently, the resilience commissioner, Shane Fitzsimmons, briefs on the efforts in the 12 LGA hotspots of concern to co-ordinate services between community leaders, staff on the ground delivering care parcels to infected families, and non-government organisations like the Salvation Army.
Then there is usually a briefing from NSW police on enforcement of the lockdown rules before they turn to the businesses of what more needs to be done. Sometimes it’s the police commissioner, Mick Fuller, or one of the deputy commissioners, Gary Warboys or Mick Willing.
The key ministers attending include the premier, Gladys Berejiklian; the deputy premier, John Barilaro; the health minister, Brad Hazzard; and the treasurer, Dominic Perrottet.

Not wise.  I think they will pick up votes as the alternative Liberal Party.  The one that has a no lockdown policy if the How-to-Votes are strident enough about that.   Yet liberal in name and democratic at heart.  The Liberal tag is a strong feature not a bug.  Australians best see themselves these days a small ‘l’ liberals, achievers not ‘woke’ socialists like Labor has become.

The article is paywalled, so I couldn’t read it.

    Whining by whom?

I don’t understand the connection between Wilcannia and Crete and holidays.  Could you expand on that please?

    I am almost speechless.

The govt allowed dispensations for people who are unable to wear a mask because of health concerns, but they need to carry a doctor’s certificate or stat dec.  Could that article suffice?

btw, who woulda thought that someone like Reba Meagher would be the voice of responsible government- Gladys, you’re now lower than the lowest.

Also, is anyone having trouble with the curser?  I can only move it if I drag it around the writing window.

Joh, I have a friend who works in a medical environment.  Also a stitcher (of fabric, not people – although she’d be a dab hand at pulling them out).

She was telling us she’s stitching masks for two year olds, seemingly oblivious of the serious health and psychological risks to the little ones.  She must be aware of this, but signalling compliance is more important.

rosie, while not wanting to jonah anyone; get back to us if out western NSW they start dropping like flies.

I always become suspicious when government and worse, medical authorities, use anecdotes instead of statistics.
The age groups and health status under most threat from Covid remain consistent across the world.
If you achieve 80-90% vaccinations for all those aged over 60 and cover people with identified at risk, you will have the overwhelming majority of fatality risks and hospitalisations covered.

“Will be interesting to see if Covid is actually an election issue at all.  Oppositions at federal and state level don’t really get a look in and haven’t really been presenting wildly different approaches.”

My opinion, NSW opposition looking likely to get up with the backlash to COVID and Gladys’s corrupt boyfriend looking like he is going to be front and centre again. Victoria opposition is trying to do too little too late with an invisible leader and a population suffering Stockholm Syndrome, so na. The Fed’s are probably going to lose it as a result of a wafer thin margin, Scomo’s weak leadership skills & NSW backlash which is where I reckon it will be lost.

Further down the track Queenslands opposition is absolutely hopeless still after being gifted Sir Joh style corruption on a plate the Palace”chooks” dad & Youngs husband they did nothing. Also they have a 2nd assault by Les Walker from Mundingburra which the charges from have been adjourned but the guy still sits on parliamentary committees. Chrisifulli has been quite impotent and sidetracked by PC 1%’ers like some gender stupidity he engaged in recently.
