Potentially The New Cat – First Open Thread 31 July 2021

Hi Cats,

As you can see I have created a copy of the Cat for you to continue to bicker, argue and occasionally make a reasonable point.

I do hope a solution is found with the original Cat but just in case Sinc doesn’t want to transfer the site to a new generation I have built a replica before the closure so we can migrate as many of the community across as possible.

Programming Note: I rushed out the site so there will be bugs. I can get them fixed but did not want perfection to get in the way for progress.

Community Note: Please let as many cats know of the new blog as soon as possible so we can capture the magic of the original. In particular would love for the original posters to continue their great work here.

Ideological Note: I am an infrequent poster but long time reader of the Cat. The discussions there have been a huge part of my own ideological growth on many issues. In particular free speech is key for me so will have a very similar light touch to the original Cat, potentially adopting my one policy on an earlier forum I built: “No D***heads” which is subjective but surprisingly easy to implement.

Website Note: I will run the Cat as close to possible as the original because I don’t believe in re-inventing the wheel. However if the community so wants I am happy to make changes to improve the experience so if you have any ideas let me know. For anything specific hit me up at the contact form, else go nuts in the comments.

Dover, I tried to get on to your site – no good, suggested was it wanted to “know” all about me – since I have no online presence apart from The Cat (the old & Adam’s) and despite what MT was telling me last night about “them” knowing about where I’ve been, I didn’t want to go down that rabbit hole.

Dot, I reiterate, please write something to help everyone along. And, surely, cohenite you could do something as well – perhaps your interest in real estate porn or what’s wrong with…Or Dr BG or Arky, what about something on maths – nothing to in depth, but surely there’s something happening in maths h/t The Big Bang Theory? Yes, Calli, I rescind that comment until Adam has had time to review this current Birdstrike and respond to it in some way. Even a statement of his position on the matter of moderation would be helpful. Surely Bird comes under the rubric of ‘dickhead’ which Adam suggests he might use for differentiation of those smite-worthy.

It has driven a heap of us over to the other site (Nilk’s) for a pleasant time of after dinner commentary. I guess there is always that.

On anti-Semitism, Alan Jones tonight mentioned a Jewish group who surveyed a number of platforms to check on anti-Semitic remarks. In one time period they found over 700 such comments. The platforms went ho hum, and removed only a few, leaving the others, some of them particularly vile, to stand. So this cancer is invading the culture very widely; another good reason for it to be refused admission here.

“Defence is avoiding scrutiny on its long-awaited response to the Brereton inquiryBEN PACKHAMFollow @bennpackham

    8:17PM August 3, 2021
    No Comments

If Defence is determined to learn the lessons of the past, why isn’t it being upfront with the public on its response to the Brereton war crimes inquiry?

Justice Paul Brereton’s report last November laid bare the most shameful chapter in the Australian Defence Force’s history, finding credible information that 25 special forces soldiers murdered 39 Afghan prisoners and civilians.

Defence’s response should have been released by the Chief of the Defence Force Angus Campbell and Chief of Army Rick Burr at a full press conference, where they could be held accountable for their reform program.

Instead, eight months on, its 36-page response was quietly uploaded onto the Afghanistan Inquiry’s website.

The document, in careful bureaucratic language, flags a series of reforms over the next 4½ years to restore moral authority, trust and confidence in the ADF.

But there is still no serious examination of the leadership failures that allowed the alleged crimes to take place. Nor is there any commitment to hold senior officers accountable for the actions of those lower down the chain of command.

On Defence’s timeline, this may or may not happen by the end of 2021 – a decade after the most serious crimes are alleged to have taken place.

The Australian people and ADF personnel who did nothing wrong want to move on. That can’t happen without openness and accountability.

The Brereton report found a perception that it was not for those “inside the wire” to question the accounts of special forces soldiers.

Defence is now acting as though it is not for those outside the department to question it’s response to such a betrayal of trust by those within its ranks.

Yes, they can, IF you always have your phone with you BUT people twigging onto this are NOT always taking their phones with them (like Criminal Cartels & Mafia Mobsters started doing after so many of their associates around the world got busted in the encrypted phone app sting), hence the Govt making in COMPULSORY for you to take your phone with you everywhere you go, “to keep you safe, by tracking & tracing when you come into contact with a ‘positive case'”.
