Potentially The New Cat – First Open Thread 31 July 2021

Hi Cats,

As you can see I have created a copy of the Cat for you to continue to bicker, argue and occasionally make a reasonable point.

I do hope a solution is found with the original Cat but just in case Sinc doesn’t want to transfer the site to a new generation I have built a replica before the closure so we can migrate as many of the community across as possible.

Programming Note: I rushed out the site so there will be bugs. I can get them fixed but did not want perfection to get in the way for progress.

Community Note: Please let as many cats know of the new blog as soon as possible so we can capture the magic of the original. In particular would love for the original posters to continue their great work here.

Ideological Note: I am an infrequent poster but long time reader of the Cat. The discussions there have been a huge part of my own ideological growth on many issues. In particular free speech is key for me so will have a very similar light touch to the original Cat, potentially adopting my one policy on an earlier forum I built: “No D***heads” which is subjective but surprisingly easy to implement.

Website Note: I will run the Cat as close to possible as the original because I don’t believe in re-inventing the wheel. However if the community so wants I am happy to make changes to improve the experience so if you have any ideas let me know. For anything specific hit me up at the contact form, else go nuts in the comments.

Well, in the Leak cartoon, the blonde-haired female human is a sexually active “blonde”, the pale spotty bloke with glasses is what used to be understood as a socially awkward “nerd”, and the funny background setting with multicloured rectangular things stacked around is what was called a “library”.
With the addition of a dialogue exchange, the juxtaposition of these incongruent…
    …never mind.

If they can go up they can come down, give them time.”

They can’t. Their claws get them up, but they aren’t good for stabilising going down the trunk, so they have to semi-slide or jump. Older cats are wiser and manage but younger cats can get very caught – hence all the fire brigade stories. This one was a dear little sable-coated Burmese, They are extremely affectionate, and this one when down was no exception. Lovely animal. I had one like this for 18 years. Now I have Attapuss, who is always hungry and who whinges a lot and who is super-dependent on me. Silly boy, I love him but he is so jealous of the Birdies, to say nothing of when I hug Hairy. Rio royalty bill could hit $400m

    Exclusive

Rio Tinto could owe as much as $400m to the traditional owners of a major Pilbara iron ore mine, with the company accused of decades of underpayments to a native title group representing remote Pilbara communities even as it declares record $14bn in iron ore profits.

The allegations are based on an audit of more than 20 years of payments due under one of the first ever land use agreements between native title holders and a major mining company in WA, and come after Rio Tinto’s iron ore division booked record profit of $13.8bn ($US10.2bn) in the first half of the year.

The dispute between Rio and the Gumala Aboriginal Corporation over payments due from the Yandicoogina mine first flared last year, as Rio scrambled to deal with the fallout from its disastrous decision to blast 46,000-year-old heritage sites at Juukan Gorge.

In July 2020 Rio wrote to the corporation, notifying its directors of a royalty underpayment spanning “a number of years” and attaching payment of about $40m plus interest.

It is not uncommon for mining companies to make minor adjustments to royalty payments after the close of the financial year, as their own financial figures clarified what was owed.

But the cheque that Rio sent was larger than the annual royalties received by GAC in the 2019 financial year, at the time the second biggest payment in its history.

Rio initially gave no indication of the basis of its recalculation, and it is understood GAC returned the cheque and demanded a full forensic audit of Rio’s payments dating back to the start of the agreement in 1997.

A spokesman for the mining giant said Rio had funded that audit, and handed over documentation to support its work.

“At GAC’s request, Rio Tinto has provided funding to meet the costs of a detailed audit on GAC’s behalf to assess the payments,” he said.

“Rio Tinto has provided both GAC and its auditors with all relevant information, including aerial surveys and detailed financial models of payment calculations.”

The report is understood to have identified close to $400m in underpayments, including interest, due over the life of the agreement.

MASSIVE civil disobedience in #Paris right now!
    Police march with protesters!

The Frogs do protesting on an industrial scale, and Micron is in political trouble – restricting access to cafes and restaurants is exactly the sort of sheltered, technocrat response the French despise. [/Peter Sellers Accent] Merde alors. For someone else, perhaps…

But the police are not marching in support of the protest. Those guys are the CRS, the serious riot/public order specialists – there to control the marchers, not fuck around emoting. One misstep by a protestor and it would be helmets on and let the truncheoning begin.

The only difference between the Liars and the Lieberals is that the Liars would give the unions whatever they wanted in their first term. The Lieberals would hold the legislation in the Senate before passing a watered down version and say, “There was nothing else we could do.”
