Does anyone know anything about artificial grass? Quality? Any downside? Problems? Integrating with plants?
    ***************

Our downstairs neighbours have installed article grass in the back section of the garden, where not much sunlight penetrates in any case, for the children to play in.

The colour is quite good, rather dark and not screamingly artificial, and it seems to be quite durable and sturdy. Easy to keep tidy too with a rake, and without the dust and grime you would normally get from churned up grass. Surprisingly good, in fact.

Calli would know more. But I bought a metre and a half of the top quality stuff about a year ago to put in an area that will eventually be concreted down the side of our place, just to keep the weeds down and to test it as a temporary solution for the large space maybe. It didn’t work out very well for the latter job but was fine for keeping weeds down. It collects a lot of debris and you have to sweep it, which is difficult as bits of leaves stick to it. The thinner cheaper stuff would probably be worse for both jobs. It might be alright for putting on concrete patios in high places. That’s about all.

    ps it looks disgusting.

Muddy, Latham refers to health reasons for not getting the jab. From what I’ve read, the vaccines can revive inactivated viruses like glandular fever. If you’ve had anything like that maybe put together something and see your doctor about getting a dispensation. Boring old farts like you have no sense of adventure left, sorry to say to you Mick. Any money Hairy and I have we have earned and paid tax on, by the way, and we spend it on things other people have occasionally liked to hear about, such as travel, and reciprocally share. Envy sounds a lot like you. And if you can’t have a joke about boozies occasionally, you live in a very miserable world. As for ‘claimed expertise’, I have plenty of opinions and expertise, not just ‘claimed’ (try me), because you do get quite a lot of experience and expertise in one long life well lived.

But you wouldn’t know anything at all about that. You’re tedium personified.

BBS – unless you absolutely have to be able to walk on it I would try to avoid artificial grass, which can grow moss like ordinary grass if it stays damp and shady anyway. The Canary Island ivy is a good ground cover for suppressing weeds and not as invasive as the more common English ivy. It still needs some care as it will eventually run up trees, walls and stuff.

BBS, re the artificial grass, ours looked pretty bad because we didn’t take care of it. It might be good for small well-tended areas. There are a variety of colours and thicknesses available. I’d suggest chossing two types, getting a small sample of each, and seeing it in situ. Alternatively, pavers are good, set into sand, with a garden mostly in pots. The people next door did their own, levelled the area, raked some sand, and set the pavers, sprinkling them then with sand and cement mix before lightly hosing.

It reduces the crime rate and produces worthwhile goods as well as educating and skilling children. As for Mongolia, it’s payback time for what the barbaric mongol hordes did in Europe. BBS, on artificial turf.

It’s an excellent solution to areas of total shade where you don’t want to install a hard surface or acres of mini mondo grass “turf”. And also hard to access spots for the mower.

It has to be installed properly, not just put down like a throw rug and left. There are plenty of videos out there on correct installation if you’re diy-ing.

To get a good result, you have to buy a premium product, do a lot of prep in the form of compacting and attending to drainage issues. Imagine you are putting down a tiny bit of a grass tennis court, for essentially that is what you are doing.

Another tip – plenty of sand in the backfill, applied at least twice – it takes more than you ever dreamed possible! It makes all the fibres stand on end and improves wear. Again, think tennis court. You want to be able to land a boeing on it – much easier to sweep up debris if the surface is hard.

    Hope this helps.

Well, there obviously is some correlation between the computer simulations described by the authors of the ADE letter to the Editor and what is being observed with Delta strain. Really is no surprise that vaccinated people remain susceptible to infection if the antibodies promoted by vaccines to Alpha strain, versus the N terminal spike protein domain have relatively SFA activity versus the Delta spike protein. At least a higher proportion of facilitating cell adhesion of spike protein and subsequent translocation into cells versus inactivating spike protein activity, could be expected with Delta from Alpha vaccine antibodies.

If reflected in vivo, current vaccines are perhaps facilitating Delta infection and severity of illness as well as spread of the virus. Probably.

Keep on giving out the vaccines- great idea Gladys and Brad!
