    Adventures with Purpose:

The Nguyen family was last seen on April 19, 2002, the day after they left home when a police officer stopped Stephanie in her car, a green 1997 Nissan Pathfinder with the Ohio license plate number ADH7739, near a boat ramp to the Ohio River.

The officer stopped her for failing to dim her headlights and noticed two children, presumably Kristina and John, asleep in the backseat of the vehicle.

Stephanie left behind notes for her husband and parents saying her failed marriage had driven her to death and she was going to kill herself and her children by driving into the Ohio River near the Grand Victoria Casino.

She disappeared along with her two children, Kristina and John.

The officer was the last person to have seen Stephanie and her 2 children alive.

This documentary brings you alongside Adventures With Purpose’s search in Rising Sun, Indiana, following clues about Stephanie’s last known location near the boat ramp, not far from the Grand Victoria Casino where Stephanie worked.

You’ll witness the search performed by AWP on that day and how Stephanie’s vehicle was located in this documentary.

  44. Shy Ted says:

I’ve read most of the Jack The Ripper books and find it fascinating how different authors, historians and researchers come to their conclusions about “whodunnit”. You can read them quickly because most agree on who the victims were but it’s interesting how they go in different directions and include or exclude the various suspects and the evidence for that. In a few there are references to psychological profiles that say he was overcome by a “homicidal mania” or “sexual mania”, from which the terms “homicidal maniac” or “sex maniac” are derived. Historical psychiatric texts detail cases of seemingly normal individuals who are suddenly overcome with a “mania” and commit a horrific crime while in the grip of it, after which it is gone. It has long since disappeared from common use. I’ve met a few patients in long term psychiatric care who have committed one or more such attacks. Diagnoses vary consistent with the changing times but most were on hormonal therapy to quell their lust and none had any of these phrases attached to them.

Did I meet one of these characters “in the raw” so to speak?

I knew perfectly well what to do but protocols said I had to consult with services for the elderly, he being over 65. He was 78 and a local “character”. Spritely, gift of the gab, top travelling salesman in his time and “not his usual self”. His GP had reported a history of bipolar affective disorder, manic depression, stable for decades, history lost in time. It’s quite common that as we age we need a lower dose of medication, the higher long term dose causing a “toxic” state and those were my initial thoughts. The symptoms of toxicity can be mild or severe and nobody is in any doubt when it’s the latter. It’s life-threatening. So I had a chat with the correct team, who, in a different town, could only offer an appointment at their next visit. To establish a good working relationship with a GP you had to “jump” when they asked, so I did.

“You’ve just missed him. He can’t stop at the moment, he’s not sleeping, he just talks and talks and talks and comes up with all these wild schemes. He’s spending all our money on them. He’s been like this since they reduced his meds,” his anxious wife told me. “He’s been like this for about two weeks but he’s getting worse.”

I took a potted history, sounded like hypomania on the background of a chronic, low-grade hypomania displaying as extraversion. “Oh no, he’d never hurt anyone,” was her response to the questions about risk. You never, ever accept that, in fact I’m inclined to believe the opposite is true. His supply of medications suggested he had stopped taking the medication, a common mood stabiliser, rather than take the reduced dose and probably because his mood was becoming elevated on the reduced dose.

As his wife had predicted he came home for his lunch and I “dropped in”. He was very likeable, garrulous and had big but wholly unrealistic plans for his future. Yep, hypomania. Poor sleep, weight loss, disorganisation completed the picture. I was gently insistent that his medications be restarted and I would call again in the morning to make sure he had taken the evening dose, observed by his wife and I would observe the morning dose before taking him to the GP.

“You don’t fucking well tell me what to do, boy”, he replied, in actually a very nice way but leaving me in no doubt he meant it.

“Actually, I do. Because if you don’t you’re going into hospital. In fact you can take the first dose now. If you don’t, hospital. Against your will”. He complied and I stayed a while longer to make sure he hadn’t secreted it. “OK, Norman, I’ll be back in the morning, just after eight, same deal”.

His wife was somewhat comfortable with the arrangement so I went and did my notes, liaised with the appropriate services and arranged a GP’ appointment for mid-morning. The rest of the day was uneventful and I called in nice and early the next day. His wife was outside on the street waiting for me.

“Terrible night, he didn’t sleep at all, ranting and raving about you. He wouldn’t take his tablet. I don’t know what to do.”

“Jump in the car, we’ll go and get the police.”

“I just need to get the house key or I’ll be locked out.”

Sensing an opportunity I followed and as she opened the door out ran Norman with a hatchet raised above his head and swung it at me with all his force. I’d long learned that you enter a residence cautiously and at an angle so you aren’t knocked over if someone rushes out. But still! Despite being spritely he was 78 and not much over five feet tall and he fell over in the attempt, dropping the hatchet. Which I picked up. You don’t think in these situations, you just act. “You fucking bastard, I’ll fucking have you!” That was him, not me.

“Don’t get up, Norman. Just stay where you are. Can you call the police?” I ordered his wife. They arrived quite quickly,

“Drop the axe, sir!” I’d not really been aware of how the situation looked but I was standing over a little old man while holding a hatchet. They smiled. Norman’ wife had asked the neighbours to call them just before I arrived declaring only “there’s a mad axeman next door!” Then they smiled. “Come on, Norman, let’s take you to the hospital”.

He spent a couple of months in the state capital’ spyychiatric hospital before returning home, very subdued, which was how he remained for the rest of my time in that funny little town. Gone was the spark, replaced by a medication-induced, passive old man. “I don’t know which is worse”, his wife reported sadly, “the old Norman or the new one. In due course she told me “we hadn’t had sex in years but he ravaged me several times that night”.

The visiting psychiatrist filled me in on his hospitalisation. He had attacked several nurses in the first few days, his intent, homicidal and driven purely by mental illness. I wasn’t allowed to read his discharge summary as technically he was a client of services for the elderly. The computer system had been updated with an alert – “extreme risk of violence when unwell”.

“Can I ask you a question? Even though I’m not supposed to be involved any more. I’ve read a few books about Jack The Ripper, homicidal and sexual mania. Was Norman suffering from this or was he just angry with me?”

    He smiled knowingly. “Yes”.

And for a long time after that eventful day my colleagues would jump aside and say, “look out, it’s the mad axeman”. Which was fun. True story.

After several days of feeling off-colour, I took a RAT and tested positive. Not surprising: gadabout granddaughters brought it home and passed it on to Daughter and SiL, who passed it on to Best Man who gave it to me. Fortunately, they’ve managed to keep it from SiL’s mother who, at 86 with several comorbidities, was the only one we’ve been worried about.

Consequently, while the family are feasting and celebrating at Daughter’s house, I’m eating a chicken wing and yesterday’s potato salad. Alone. *Sob*

Not at all, Steve. That *sob* was a brazen try for sympathy, written with a smile on my dial. 🙂
I chose to stay home partly because I’m feeling a tad poorly and have a rotten cough. But mainly, we are trying to shield SiL’s 86 yo and unwell mother from the virus. The big family house was her idea and we’re all praying that she lives to enjoy it.
Almost all of us have had covid now, probably because – apart from frail Mum – we haven’t let it interfere with family life. No-one spread it around in public, but neither did we isolate at home, or limit kisses and cuddles.
We are all vehemently anti covid ‘vax’ and the only reason we used the RATs was to confirm what we suspected. The info regarding test results remains in the family, not shared with any authority.

Thanks for your concern, Steve, but I’m lucky that all of us are in agreement about the covid scam. I hope for your sake – and his – that your Dad sees the light soon.

Anthony Albanese forced to backtrack after blunder

Anthony Albanese was forced into yet another awkward backtrack on Sunday morning after a disastrous start to his election campaign.

The Labor leader attended an Easter Sunday service at St Monica’s church in Cairns with his partner Jodie Haydon, and only took a handful of questions from journalists following the service.

But he had another stumble when asked by a reporter if he remained committed to Operation Sovereign Borders, and if so, if he supported the retention of temporary protection visas.

Mr Albanese’s response was a succinct – but entirely incorrect – “yes”.

In fact, Labor opposes the visas on the grounds that they leave those seeking asylum in limbo for years on end.

However, Mr Albanese later clarified that he had misheard the original question, and that “Labor’s policy is to support Operation Sovereign Borders”.

For example, captopril was the first drug derived from viper venom approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat hypertension and congestive heart failure [10]. This venom-derived drug development strategy counts on the fact that snake venom compounds target ion channels (Na+, K+, and Ca2+ channels) and receptors (acetylcholine receptors, membrane transporters, enzymes), and consequently can partake in different physiological events. Interestingly, the biological effects of venom are due to the individual activities of their compounds or to the synergy of several molecules, therefore broadening the spectrum of their biological activities.

These properties of snake venom compounds make them a valuable source for the discovery of new drugs for the treatment of several diseases including CVDs. The clinical benefits of snake venoms have emerged in two main directions related to the cardiovascular system: (i) the management of hypertension and (ii) the consequences of platelet aggregation with anti-thrombotic therapy.
