And when there’s a power outage or the network goes down, all financial transactions stop. Every few months, a bank’s network seizes up, and all the retailers who use that bank for their EFTPOS transactions are unable to trade, except if the customer has cash.

I read a comment on this SVB crash and how during the Great Depression people were getting their money out of banks and saving them under the mattresses.

So many have fallen for the wonders of technology. The marketing tells them how easy it would be to have one chip from which they can carry out all the transactions and activities of their life.

What happens when the tech systems go down? And cash has been phased out? You’ll own nothing, buy nothing, eat nothing, and you’ll be very, very happy.

The media in Oz has been broadcasting details of the AUKUS submarine deals. Is this planned misinformation to deceive the enemies or are they the facts?

So all the details: What kind? Where they will be built? How?
And best of all, that they will be available in 20 years.

By the time these submarines will be ready, the technology won’t be outdated in the 2040s?

So, is Xi rescheduling his plans with his team?
Well, comrades, let’s postpone attacking Australia till 2043 when they will have some old tech submarines to fight fairly against us?

    Am I missing something here?

This is not an outcome Washington promised its European allies, but it’s now a real possibility.

America must have sold the war to its European allies as a short, sharp jab at Russia which will see it fold in a few months. The European allies probably believed that their economic sanctions on Russia, together with the expected high loss of life amongst the Russian army, would see Putin kicked from office.

It didn’t work out that way though. The Russian economy was sufficiently resilient to take the sanctions, and its army was able to break through the first two of the four supposed impregnable lines of defence quite easily and inflict heavy losses on the Ukrainians while suffering significantly less loss themselves.

Now we have a weakened Europe unable to defend themselves. They have lost their cheap energy supplies and a major market for their industrial output.

Europe has shot itself in the foot.

ECB Is First Central Bank to Face Rate Test. What It Means for the Fed.

…President Christine Lagarde set expectations for the ECB to lift the main refinancing rate to 3.5% from the current 3% by saying last month that policy makers intended to do so. The ECB also delivered a half-point increase at the last decision on Feb. 8.

The sharp drops in European bank shares on Wednesday, led by problems at Credit Suisse , may impact the ECB’s plans. The most aggressive interest-rate increases in a generation created problems at SVB, and the worry is that other lenders may be experiencing similar issues.

Markets have reduced the odds of a 50 basis-point move from the ECB on Thursday, said ING Global Head of Markets Chris Turner.

“The pressure on European banks has sparked a repricing,” Turner wrote in a note Wednesday. “What was seen as a solid 50bp hike from the ECB has today been cut to a 35bp hike.”

Lagarde will almost certainly be asked about banking woes and market ructions over the past week when she holds a press conference Thursday afternoon. Like the Fed, the ECB is still trying to bring down inflation that remains far too fast for comfort.

Inflation is still 8.5% in the 20 countries sharing the euro, compared with the ECB’s target of 2%.

In the Oz today, is a story:

    Adoption fight over Indigenous heritage

Two young siblings could be barred from adoption by their long-term foster family after they discovered, five years after first being placed in the family’s care, they were Aboriginal.

The two children are with a foster family and the review has been that they are happy, well-adjusted and cared for.

But now the discovery that grandmother is aboriginal. So the mother who hasn’t been able to care for her two children, by different fathers, is now wanting the children to be adopted only by aboriginals who will bring them up in the culture, traditions etc, etc.

How about the tradition of birth mother and father behaving like responsible parents and taking care of their children and providing for their needs?

The foster family is doing all it can to ensure the children learn about their heritage and the foster mother takes them to where ever necessary. But they can’t adopt these kids. I would guess that if anyone asked the children, they would choose to live with this family.

But who cares about what is best for the children? They are just pawns to be used by activists.

Labor rift deepens as Albanese, Wong return fire at Keating

A brawl has erupted within Labor over the deal to acquire eight nuclear-powered submarines from the United States and United Kingdom, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and senior cabinet ministers push back on former prime minister Paul Keating’s strident criticisms of the AUKUS pact.

Albanese said his predecessor’s jibes did nothing “other than diminish him, frankly”, while Foreign Minister Penny Wong, whom Keating lambasted in an appearance at the National Press Club, said his views on China and other foreign policy questions “belong to another time”. But Keating’s attack on the government struck a nerve in Labor ranks, as Rudd and Gillard era cabinet minister Peter Garrett said the AUKUS deal “stinks” and two powerful blue-collar unions condemned the nuclear-powered project as a dangerous waste of money.

Rebutting Keating’s claim that AUKUS represented “the worst deal in all history”, Albanese said the government’s decision to spend up to $368 billion on a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines over the next 30 years was a worthwhile investment to enhance Australia’s national security in a volatile era. Wong also hit back at the Labor luminary, saying Australia could not “wish away” China’s military build-up under Xi over recent years.

“Keating has his views, but in substance and in tone they belong to another time,” she said.

Others echoed Keating’s criticisms of AUKUS. Peter Garrett, a veteran anti-nuclear campaigner who served as environment minister under Kevin Rudd, tweeted: “This deal stinks with massive cost, loss of independence, weakening nuke safeguards & more.” The maritime and electrical trades unions, whose members would be expected to get much of the work upgrading ports for the new submarines, also swung in with objections.
