    • I criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau;
    • I criticized Justin Trudeau’s former chief of staff, Gerald Butts;
    • I criticized an Ottawa city councillor; and
    • I made a joke about the prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern.

    Peterson asks the reader these questions:

    • What makes you think that something similar won’t happen to you, or to someone you know and respect or even love?
    • What makes you think you are going to continue to be able to communicate honestly with your physicians, lawyers and psychologists (and representatives of many other regulated professions) if they are now so terrified of their regulatory boards that they can no longer tell you the truth?
    • What are your children going to be taught when all their teachers (that’s a regulated profession, too) are so afraid of the woke mob that they swallow all the ideological lies that are now required of pedagogues — regardless if they believe what they are saying?
    • Where are we going to be if we allow criticism of the public figures charged with the privilege of our governance to be grounds for the demolition of not only the critic’s reputation but their very livelihood?
    • How far are we willing to go down this road, without forthright resistance?

    Zelensky blasts Russian Orthodox Church call for Christmas truce
    as Putin orders cease-fire

    On the eve of Christmas for the Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow’s Patriarch Kirill called for a Christmas truce between Ukraine and Russia amid the ongoing hostilities. The ask was for a 2-day cease-fire so that the faithful could attend Mass. Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to the short-term cease-fire.

    The leader of the war-torn nation of Ukraine balked at the idea of peace, with Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the Chief of Staff, calling the call for a truce a “cynical trap and an element of propaganda.”

    Trump is the problem, not the solution

    Former President Donald J. Trump made a crucially timed call to Representative Matt Gaetz on Friday night after the Florida congressman voted “present” and sunk Kevin McCarthy’s 14th effort to be elected House speaker.

    Mr. Trump’s call may have played a role in Mr. Gaetz opting to continue with another round of balloting, along with a small group of other members who had been opposing McCarthy’s candidacy.

    Mr. Trump called Mr. Gaetz, according to two people briefed on the call who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly. CNN reported that Mr. Trump also called Representative Andy Biggs, who switched from voting against Mr. McCarthy to voting “present” on the 15th round.

    A photo taken of members on the House floor showed Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican from Georgia and an ally of Mr. McCarthy, holding up her cellphone, with “DT” on the other end, and trying to give the phone to Representative Matt Rosendale, who had voted for a different candidate on the most recent ballot. Mr. Rosendale appeared to brush her off as she tried to hand him the phone.

    I’ve just watched the OpenAI and JP videos. It would have advantages in certain areas of research due to the speed with which it can locate and compile information and that would be good.

    If the AI systems at this initial stage can produce complex assignments in a few minutes, is it really so wonderful? Is it not on the pathway to replacing human beings? We already have the digital technology being used to spy on us and make us less relevant.

    Yep. I get called in to teach occasionally at various Unis, (but I don’t last long). I can tell you that ChatGPT produces better assignment submission that 60% of the current students if it is just knowledge based. Certainly better than the ones they pay for. The lecturers, unless they are active in the field they are teaching ( very few are) will not know what to do. At first they relied on Turnitin to catch the cheats. Then they made it illegal to contract out assignments. This was just a dance.
    My initial thoughts are that AI will produce a knowledge greyness – a regression to the mean – as it basically finds and concatenates knowledge based on past frequency.
    As to the future, unknown, but there will be opportunities as ever for the small fish who swim around the whale.

    Yes, It might seem counterintuitive at first, but this is actually a consequence of the way that gravity works. The force of gravity decreases with distance, so an object that is farther away from a larger object will experience a weaker gravitational pull. In order to remain in orbit, an object must balance the inward force of gravity with the outward force of its own motion. If an object is farther from the larger object, it will experience a weaker gravitational pull, so it must move faster in order to maintain its orbit. This is why Europa, which is farther from Jupiter, is moving faster than Io, which is closer to Jupiter.
