Man takes his own life after hotel quarantine

    Natalie Wolfe

The family of a Queensland man are fighting for answers and change after he tragically took his own life less than a day after leaving two weeks of hotel quarantine last year.

Brendan Luxton, who was a childhood friend of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, took his own life on July 17, 2020, with the family telling The Courier-Mail their desperate pleas to Queensland Health were repeatedly ignored.

Mr Luxton had been grappling with mental health issues when he returned home to Brisbane to be supported by his family last year.

A year after his tragic death, Brendan’s sister Marita Corbett and younger brother Derek Luxton are calling for change after they witnessed their brother’s mental health severely deteriorate in his two weeks quarantine.

Mr Luxton (R) with his siblings.

“The lack of compassion and common sense from this government is galling,” Ms Corbett said.
Three days into Mr Luxton’s quarantine, Ms Corbett realised her brother’s mental health was deteriorating and she started the exemption process.

Despite outlining an entire Covid safety plan, that would give Mr Luxton an entire floor of his sister’s house, and writing to Queensland Health that his “mental despair was … extreme and unbearable”, her requests were ignored.

Mr Luxton returned to his sister’s house after completing two weeks in hotel quarantine, taking his own life 24 hours after being released.

“It is staggering to me that despite outlining Brendan’s mental health history, and submitting a detailed Covid-safe plan, our application was just thrown on the pile,” Ms Corbett told The Courier-Mail.

“Dannii Minogue was granted an exemption to quarantine in a Gold Coast mansion, and it’s fine for NRL players to get special treatment, but ordinary Queenslanders get no help.”
Derek, Mr Luxton’s younger brother, said they believed if Brendan had been released from quarantine when they asked, he would still be alive today.

‘I don’t think we should trust anybody. So i think we need a submarine we can build and maintain in Australia.’

    Neil.

This country, at present, cannot build and maintain a lawnmower – let alone a submarine, let alone a fleet of submarines, let alone provision and fuel them during wartime.

    Guns? Ammo?

If we are reliant on another country, we are at their mercy and whim – is that what we want when it comes to national defense?

First of all we can and have built subs here – yes, they weren’t particularly great, but that means there are two options:

Give up and buy from someone else
Learn from the mistakes and build better next time.

If we do it ourselves, and end up making a great piece of kit, we can sell it to other countries that might want the same.

Consider the car industry – Holden made a profit on designing and building just 200k cars, something done nowhere else in the world. That product was the basis for it’s parent companies new models in the US as well – products that were praised by industry “critics”/writers as well as the general public as a good quality design and cheap to manufacture.

We can do it – if we want to and if we dare. I think we should do it. We have a history of making innovative stuff, even military stuff – CIWS (radar controlled gattling gun to destroy ship killer missiles) is Australian invention, as is over-the-horizon back-scatter radar. Both those technologies were given to the US and other allies. We have the engineering talent to design and build whatever is required, we just lack the political will to do it.

I think we should build diesels but always have one under construction so we don’t lose any building skills. If we have 10 subs and build one every 4 years that means we would have a continual production line.

Is that quieter than the noise generated from extremely quiet reactor cooling pumps. Will the snorkel be seen from satellites, will the the engine be heard from sonar arrays? Answer the question or piss off. You’ve become boring, but you knew that already.

    JOINT MEDIA RELEASE
Key Naval projects confirmed for South Australia

    Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham
    Minister for Finance
Leader of the Government in the Senate
    Senator for South Australia

    The Hon. Scott Morrison MP
    Prime Minister

    The Hon. Peter Dutton MP
    Minister for Defence

    Date: Thursday, 16 September 2021

South Australia will spearhead a major expansion of Australia’s naval capabilities, supporting thousands of jobs and advancing the state’s shipbuilding expertise.

A number of naval projects have been confirmed for South Australia, following the announcement today of a new enhanced security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The first initiative under the partnership, known as AUKUS, is to acquire nuclear-powered submarines for Australia, which are intended to be built in South Australia.

The Morrison Government has also approved a Life-of-Type Extension to the Collins class submarine fleet from 2026 in South Australia, and confirmed that the Full-Cycle Docking of the Collins class will continue to be conducted at Osborne. Up to $6.4 billion will be invested in these works, and around 1,300 jobs supported in South Australia.

The Government will also invest up to $5.1 billion in upgrades to the Hobart Class destroyer combat management system upgrades at Osborne from 2024, creating 300 jobs in the state.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the investments reinforced the Government’s commitment to South Australia’s shipbuilding industry.

“This expansion of Australia’s naval capabilities will strengthen national security, boost our sovereign workforce and support thousands of jobs in the South Australian industry,” the Prime Minister said.

“South Australia is home to some of the most skilled shipbuilding workers in the world, they have the know-how, ingenuity, industrial knowledge and determination that is required to provide our Defence Force with the very best capability.”

Minister for Defence Peter Dutton said the Government’s investments would ensure Australia maintained a strong and agile submarine capability for decades.

“The Collins class submarine to this day remains one of the most capable conventional submarines in the world,” Minister Dutton said.

“The planned Life-of-Type Extension, through the replacement of key systems, will help deliver Defence’s strategic objectives.

“The upgrade to the Aegis combat management system will ensure our fleet of Hobart class air warfare destroyers maintain their capability-edge into the future.

“Both of these projects announced today are vital for Defence’s ability to act with greater independence in an increasingly contested strategic environment.”

Minister for Finance and Senator for South Australia Simon Birmingham said the state would continue to benefit from the Morrison Government’s sovereign and continuous naval shipbuilding program.

“South Australia is the engine room of naval shipbuilding in this country,” Minister Birmingham said.

“Full-Cycle Docking and Life-of-Type Extension at Osborne will ensure we retain our skilled shipbuilding workforce, and will continue to create opportunities for local businesses to engage with the defence industry.

“In addition, the up to $5.1 billion investment in upgrading the Hobart class combat management system will create extra economic activity as well as around 300 jobs in the state.

“Conducting these sustainment projects in Osborne, on top of the building of frigates and submarines will ensure South of Australia continues to be the epicentre of naval shipbuilding in this country.”

Collins class submarine HMAS Farncomb will be the first to undergo a Life-of-Type Extension when it enters its next Full-Cycle Docking in 2026.

OK to recharge the batteries they have to turn on the diesel engine which sounds like a freight train.

But you say a diesel sub can run for 3 days on batteries. In some situations that should be fine. I think they can run for longer as well. Israel has Diesel subs.

Perhaps we could ask Israel to help us build diesel subs.

Perth crowd joins anti-lockdown, anti-vaccine mandate protests
    By Cameron Myles

A big crowd has gathered in Perth’s Forrest Place, joining anti-lockdown protests across the country.

Bearing signs with slogans such as “Coercion is not consent”, the protesters railed against COVID-19 lockdowns in other states, the coronavirus vaccine, and vaccine mandates.

While Perth is not in lockdown and COVID-19 restrictions in Western Australia are minimal – aside from closed borders with several eastern states – the crowd voiced support for other protests around the country on Saturday, such as those in New South Wales and Victoria, which have seen clashes with police as officers attempt to stymie the gatherings.

Among the anti-vaccine talking points and numerous red ensign Australian flags waving in the chilly wind of an overcast day were conspiracy theory tropes urging people to do their own “research”, and signs pouring scorn on the mainstream media’s reporting of the coronavirus pandemic.

Support for political parties was also thin on the ground, save for a few signs championing Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party – whose MP Craig Kelly was recently chastised by the country’s medical regulator over his use of TGA extracts in unsolicited text messages – and there was the telltale orange of a One Nation backer among the crowd, accompanied by a large cutout of party leader Pauline Hanson.

The most vitriol, however, was reserved for vaccine mandates…

The U.S. law firm Wilmer Hale conducted the probe into the World Bank’s Doing Business report and published its findings on September 15. “We used to do the junior world titles and we knew if we just kept doing those we might get noticed in Europe,” Jett said.
“Thankfully, my brother got noticed and we were like, sorry guys, we are kind of like a packaged deal, so I got lucky on that.
“The plan was to just try and get known because the sport in Australia is obviously awesome – it’s great.
“But the motocross industry in Europe and America was just so much bigger with a lot more money in it.”
Motocross is a very demanding and highly competitive sport, so these guys must be very good indeed at it.

    Well done, fellas!

    “””Diesel submarines are shit.

From a stealth point of view they are the equivalent of a pimp driving a pink cadillac convertible with a boot full of doof-doof speakers turned up to eleven.””

When running on batteries diesel subs make less noise than a nuc because batteries make no noise. Unlike a nuclear power plant. But how about this submarine from the Japanese. I got this from Wikipedia

“”””” The Taigei-class submarines (29SS), ( たいげい, 大鯨 ), “Big Whale”, is a new class of attack submarines developed for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is the successor to the Sōryū class. The Taigei class is equipped with a large amount of lithium-ion batteries, as is the case with the eleventh and twelfth submarines of the Sōryū class (Ōryū and Tōryū), making it possible for the submersible to travel longer and at higher speeds under water than conventional diesel-electric submarines.””””

Plus i still say we should be as self sufficient as possible because the Americans may not be around to help out. And we would need lots of help running a nuc. Less help needed running a diesel submarine

Old Bloke- Diesel submarines can travel for thousands of miles running on the diesel engine

I got a call from NSW Health on Thursday night. Said I had been a close contact at a business in Wetherill Park. I said I have been been to Wetherill Park and never heard of the business. No worries they said. You still need to stay in a separate bedroom and avoid all contact with your wife. We will sort it out. Since then I have been called a few times. Repeatedly said I have never been in Wetherill Park. I live over 30km away. Ok stay in your bedroom.

The protest in Perth is pretty significant, where COVID doesn’t even exist, but government authoritarianism does.   So many people confused and worried by the  governments  over-reaching into their life and feeling forced into things and their movements tracked even going to Woolies.

And the pictures show the most everyday people.   I wonder if the McClown premier is noticing.

They tried this on in Italy and a note has come out to characterise the event. Two unrelated individuals were at the same place in time and subsequent PCR testing confirmed they had the virus. However, deeper genomic analysis showed they both had different mutations of the virus, which were again different from the patient-zero virus.

I was initially overjoyed to learn Australia had scrapped the dud bespoke diesel subs plan and gone for the off-the-shelf nuclear option.   There is no place for bespoke diesel subs in the future.  We must have credible weapons and be able to interoperate with our powerful allies.

On reflection we are still a long way from a satisfactory solution.

2030 is a long way off while China is an imminent threat in Asia right now. It makes no sense to waste more time and money creating a construction industry in Australia for this project.   We need to obtain a fleet rapidly.  And what about training the crews? We will need to recruit and train a lot of people – and they will need to be trained by UK and/or US experts.

Building these boats in Australia is going to be a very costly learning process with no obvious military benefit.

The USA and the UK have both been building nuclear subs for over half a century and and have massive experience, and infrastructure and large skilled labour forces. Plus they have actual nuclear industries and expertise and can install the atomic propulsion units at the same time they build the hulls.  How are the power units going to be installed in our boats?  Do we send the hulls to the USA or do they send the propulsion units here?  Either way there will be both engineering and political problems.

I suspect the interference of our corrupt military-industrial complex and pork-barrelling politicians putting profits and politics before Australia’s national interest.  These people, who were also responsible for the dud diesel sub plan, need to be stopped.

My understanding is one or 2 off the shelf subs will be supplied immediately.
