Oi, Steve! That was me, late for work, on my Yammy.
Kidding, of course. I did ride a Yammy 250 off-road, but I was usually (sorta) sedate. Unlike Best Man who spent ages building a ramp and then flying over it in (sorta) Evel Knievel style. First attempt was brilliant. He (and bike) sailed through the air and grounded with great aplomb. Second attempt, with cameras, video etc recording, he sailed through the air a good three metres further than the bike.
Great fun.

Dunderheaded comment of the day, in a crowded field, goes to:
Neil, at 12.02:
‘We need to be different. Why go for the biggest and fastest all the time??’
Because the biggest, fastest and quietest submarines (nukes are quieter all the time because they have less moving parts, and submarine batteries are on par with electric car batteries in terms of time in use) are the ones that will WIN THE WAR.
Also, this one for the quinella:
‘Why cannot we be a little different and create a niche market with diesel submarines which can do something the nucs cannot??’
You may have a point here, Neil. Diesels can indeed do something far better than nukes.
Get blown up.

“”””” Because the biggest, fastest and quietest submarines (nukes are quieter all the time because they have less moving parts “””
Why do nuclear submarines have less moving parts??? A nuclear reactor has more moving parts than batteries. It is the reason that nuclear submarines are more noisy than a diesel submarine when it is running on batteries.
I have never seen a link where it says that nukes make less noise than a diesel submarine operating on battery power

That was my point. The USA was never going to take part in WW2. It was only when the Japanese attacked them that they got involved
And then Germany declared war of the USA not the other way around.
If japan did not attack the US they never would have gotten involved. And Germany only declared as on the USA to back up their ally, Japan
That is why i said we cannot trust the US.

My understanding is that when operating under battery power they are quieter than a nuclear submarine because the nuclear reactor cooling system makes noise. It is only when they turn the diesel engine on to recharge the batteries that they sound like a freight train.
I cannot get links to work but here goes. Here is a google search with many links showing diesels are quieter than nucs when operating under battery power.

Technology apparently. Given the Brits have been operating nuke boats for 50 years, and they acquired the tech from the USA, they went down this path before.
Report comment
Neil, only if you compare apples with apples.
IF and only IF, everything is the same, then a diesel on batts will be quieter than a nuclear IF the nuclear is running cooling pumps.
However, the diesel’s disadvantages outweigh this very slight advantage. These design problems include:
the diesel has only a window of days when it can operate without snorting to recharge its batteries. The nuclear can stay submerged indefinitely.
the diesel has limited range and the enemy can work out its vectors to get on station. The nuclear by comparison can take a lengthy circuitous route to get to the same spot without being intercepted.
the nuclear has tremendous burst speed to get to the intercept spot and kill the enemy before the diesel can.
There are more but this might give you an idea why nuclears are preferable. The best navies in the world – the RN and the USN – not to say the Frogs, all operate ONLY nuclears now. The diesel slight advantage in only ONE area does not outweigh the nuclear’s in many.

Damian Drum has an interesting take on climate. I wonder if he advocates solar powered submarines. From the Hun:
‘I was recently told by a climate change activist from my electorate I have one of two choices: I could be a climate hero or a climate vandal. But what if I want to be neither?
What annoys me about the climate change debate is the divisive arguments put forward by both extremes are as ridiculous as each other.
On one side, there are those who refuse to acknowledge we must transition away from gas and coal. This group is ignoring the science, and as a trading nation, we will be subject to emission-based trade conditions, whether we like it or not. On the other side, there are those that want to demonise the coal and gas sector. They don’t care about the price of electricity, reliability, or China’s and India’s emissions dwarfing ours. They are simply hell bent on putting the blame of climate change on everyday Australians.’
This under the heading ‘Middle Ground Is The Safest.’

BTW did you know that the idea of “no taxation without representation” started at Magna Carta in the 1200’s. The unelected undemocratic Kings Council forced the King to sign that document. One of the things in that document was that the English could not be taxed without the consent of the Kings Council. That council evolved into Parliament and that concept was taken into the newly formed Parliament
The Monarch was still the govt but to invade Scotland for example you need money. And to get the money he had to call up Parliament to authorise the extra taxation. It was because Parliament had the taxing powers that allowed it to become more and more powerful over the centuries
