Paul Kelly talking now at Scommo’s presser tells us 10,000 covid cases so far for the year and 39 deaths. I know we’re supposed to be living in fear of the delta strain but that death rate is only that of a bad flu.

    ——————

Every death will be attributed to COVID from now on.

It’s been reported on the news a few minutes ago that an older woman was found dead overnight in her home. First, how do they know it was COVID? And if it was known previously why was she not in medical care? Wouldn’t this be negligence on the part of NSW Health?

But let’s lock up people even more tightly so that if they die they may not be found for months.

“ABC’s James Valentine mocks the public broadcaster paying $79,000 in damages to Liberal MP Andrew Laming

    Sophie Elsworth

    @sophieelsworth
An hour ago August 13, 2021

The ABC has mocked the taxpayer-funded broadcaster’s $79,000 payout to Coalition MP Andrew Laming after he was defamed in a social media post by high-profile Four Corners reporter Louise Milligan.

The payout to Dr Laming was ordered by the Federal Court on Wednesday, with the media organisation also agreeing to pay Dr Laming’s legal costs as well as their own — leaving the ABC with an overall legal bill which is likely to be in excess of $80,000, on top of the damages.

On Thursday, the ABC’s Media Bites segment — which the broadcaster’s website describes as “the show that casts a critical eye over the media industry, watching the watchers and commenting on all forms of media, spin and communications” — made light of the defamation payment, which resulted from Milligan posting about an unproven incident involving Dr Laming.

ABC Sydney’s afternoon radio host James Valentine – who was filling in for regular Media Bites host Paul Barry – joked about the national broadcaster’s handling of public funds.

In the short clip which has already attracted tens of thousands of views online, Mr Valentine said: “They (the ABC) are forking out $79,000 plus costs to MP Andrew Laming over a tweet by the ABC’s star reporter Louise Milligan.

“Who said we don’t put your money to good use.””

Hunter Biden Trending On Twitter Again – Highlighting The Potential Spread Of Misinformation As Well As Our National Divide.

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, found himself the topic of conversation once again on social media, and by Thursday afternoon there were more than 133,000 tweets related to the younger Biden. Many were openly mocking him, while others came to his defense – as links to a story that was were first posted to a British tabloid on Wednesday were shard across Twitter.

    Breaking News Or Uncorroborated Rumors?

The Daily Mail newspaper, which had previously posted numerous stories about the content from a laptop that reportedly had belonged to Hunter Biden, claimed it had “unearthed footage” in which the president’s son told a prostitute in Las Vegas that Russian drug dealers stole another of his laptops.

The content of said laptop(s) has been controversial since it was first reported in the lead-up to last year’s presidential election. Since then, a number of stories emerged after the younger Biden had reportedly left a laptop at a Delaware repair shop. Biden has maintained he has no recollection of ever dropping off the laptop.

However, it allegedly had a plethora of damning content. Yet, as Newsweek also reported, if the video posted on The Daily Mail this week were true, Hunter Biden would had to have lost three computers containing sensitive information including one in Las Vegas, one in Delaware and yet another that was reportedly seized by federal agents.

While the story sounds incredible, many who have been openly vocal in their opposition to President Biden have quickly shared the story on social media.

That post was liked more than 10,000 times and retweeted some 2,429 times – even as there was no corroboration that the story was in anyway factual. Instead that one story was posted, reposted and circulated like it was fact.

Sean Spicer, former White House press secretary and White House communications director under President Trump also jumped on the story, posting, “For everyone who opined that Trump was controlled by Russia and scrutinized every action & tweet from his kids, maybe it’s worth noting that Hunter Biden claims Russian stole his laptop..at least think about it.”

This isn’t the first time that content from a laptop purported to belong to Hunter Biden has trended on social media for its content. Many hundreds of others called for an investigation, despite the fact that Hunter Biden holds no office.

“It’s an effort to not let the story die,” said technology and telecommunications analyst Roger Entner of Recon Analytics.

It could be seen a way to target the current president by way of his family, and it may not be coming just from average Americans however.

“We don’t know how many of those are actually Americans or and how many are foreign trolls that benefit from fanning the divisions in our country,” added Entner.

    Biden Defenders

As many took aim at Hunter Biden, many others rallied to his defense – at least in a roundabout way, by pointing out potential transgressions made by the family of former President Trump. In those cases numerous allegations, which haven’t actually been proven, were also called up as fact.

In this way, it could be argued that social media has essentially weaponized rumor, innuendo and hearsay as misinformation. But it also makes it very difficult to actually debate these issues rationally.

“It’s worrisome because rumor makes for dangerous policy,” explained Matthew Schmidt, Ph.D., coordinator of international affairs at the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven.

“But it’s also not new,” said Schmidt. “Benjamin Franklin published widely read papers that had obviously fake news in them, and pamphleteers distributed thousands of what we’d today call blogs – but on paper! In the absence of other forms of mass communication, the printed word had enormous effect on what people believed about public figures.”

“Obfuscated, of course, but there in the data.”

The data table is comparing the incidence in the general population (as calibrated from studies of deleterious pregnancy effects) with the deleterious effects found in the study population. The table suggests that the incidence of both spontanious aborition and still birth in the study population of pregnancies is within normal populaton parameters. This has been misread by the commenters, who have taken the general population incidence as the incidence in the study, making assumptions then on the basis of the table as to when women received their vaxx.

This sort of misreading really does need correction to stop widespread panic. I am not someone who likes to interfere with normal pregnancy unless there is convincing evidence of safety and need to interfere, and I would prefer longer term studies with a wide sample population with much more controlling for variables, but even so, sheer misreporting needs to be called out.

Just for those interested in what you might be paying for new houses and renos. The price of steel has risen by 49% over the past six months.

Makes the closure of the Newcastle steelworks because uncompetitive seem a trifle premature.

Hiya, Tailgunner. Not really wanting to blog right now, but when I see things that might terrify pregnant women unless corrected I feel a moral duty* to correct the misreading of an epidemiological paper. Whether it is a good paper or not. Actually, it is OK, which is why it is published, but limited in sample and controlling factors.

Pregnacy is fraught enough without major extra concerns. Especially in the first trimester where miscarrying is easily around 12% in population terms. 🙂

No one interested in the price of steel? Okay.

I’ll just leave it there so you can ponder the ramifications. Fortunately we still produce cement and blue metal in quantity. And we have plenty of sand.

The brickworks will be back to full production hopefully by Christmas.

Made me laugh, Crossie. I agree that the current health communication leaves much to be desired. And that’s even if you might agree that some health measures may be necessary until vaxx levels ramp up for another few weeks. But not necessarily full-scale lockdowns, which are basically pain with no gain in the current situation. Zero cases is not going to be attainable, nor even desirable in terms of herd immunity. I think Gladys is tacitly recognising this, but held back by ideologues.

    The Australian is reporting…

NSW to crack down on singles bubble.

Citizens will now “be forced to register their companion” under a strict new regime.

    Like a dog.

The Australian understands that people will have to register their companion through Service NSW, which will be accessible to police officers conducting checks.*

    Thanks lad.

    Idiotic and tyrannical.

Indeed. Making serious death threats on a carriage medium is a criminal offense.

One can only hope that satire is involved, as in NADT.
But it is a fine line, to be cautiously trod, not flagrantly flaunted.

I was hoping Lady Nilk might also, so I could say how much I liked her king parrots and especially her friendly brushtail. Banana slices, luxury!

Still oodles of currawongs at Cafe Bruce. The grey butcherbirds obviously have kids since they’re quite clucky – obsessively collecting vast quantities of food from the head waiter. And the noisies’ eggs have hatched this week or so, so they’re now collecting bread bits for their newest bunch of kiddies.
