Auckland in New Zealand is bracing for more rain after the city recorded its wettest 24 hours on record, leading to sudden widespread flooding and a state of emergency declaration.
Air NZ has diverted 12 international flights after Auckland Airport closed yesterday afternoon due to significant flooding, with thousands left stranded.

When more significant accidents involving these sources have occurred, correct handling and response has resulted in maintenance of the high level of safety associated with sealed sources.
It’s believed the capsule could be on the side of the Great Northern Highway between Perth and Newman, but motorists who’ve travelled that route since January 10 are being urged to check their tyres, as the capsule could have become stuck in them.
What I can say about the South Australian Department for Child Protection is that they went completely overboard with reporting when it became mandatory for kids deemed at risk. There was a well established procedure that health staff, where parents and guardians came to our attention for a variety of reasons, would do background checks, talking to relatives who might reassure us the kids were fine and mum (or dad/step-dad) was just having a bad day. Reporting was online or by phone but it took ages and required detail we just didn’t have such as all the kids in the house’ names and dates of birth. And everybody had to report – police, health, welfare so the actual reports were double and triplicated.
Most staff were junior social workers, snowed under with administrative tasks and no experience picking out real warning signs. Some areas really are like Sunnyvale (Housos) and don’t welcome agencies and the numbers of chaotic households are staggering. But it’s the boss’ job to streamline it and make it efficient and administrators don’t know how to do that because all bureaucrats understand is more process.
Some kids would be flagged “GoM”, Guardianship of the Minister, the most vulnerable kids. State care and the rest but behaviourally incorrigible so they were frequent attenders. Junior doctors might ask me what GoM was. I’d look around and if no one was within earshot I’d say “the next generation of monsters”. Not nice but true.
One day I got sent to work in the Mother and Baby Mental Health Unit against my wishes (it’s a job for lady nurses). I had to look after mother (junkie), twin sons of 6 months, who, while they had been physically cared for, mum and junkie boyfriend, after feeding and cleaning them just left them in their cribs while they partied. Both infants had flat skulls at the back from just laying there 24/7. Who knows what long term consequences there will be. They’d flown completely under the radar until a routine post natal check. What do you do with these kids and their parents?
