Fed rate hikes won’t bring down inflation as long as government spending stays high, paper says

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell proclaimed Friday that the central bank has an “unconditional” responsibility to ease inflation and expressed confidence that it will “get the job done.”

But a paper released at the same Jackson Hole, Wyoming, summit where Powell spoke suggests policymakers can’t do the job by themselves and actually could make matters worse with aggressive interest rate increases.

In the current case, inflation is being driven largely by fiscal spending in response to the Covid crisis, and simply raising interest rates won’t be enough to bring it back down, researchers Francesco Bianchi of Johns Hopkins University and Leonardo Melosi of the Chicago Fed wrote in a white paper released Saturday morning.

“The recent fiscal interventions in response to the Covid pandemic have altered the private sector’s beliefs about the fiscal framework, accelerating the recovery but also determining an increase in fiscal inflation,” the authors said. “This increase in inflation could not have been averted by simply tightening monetary policy.”

The Fed, then, can bring down inflation “only when public debt can be successfully stabilized by credible future fiscal plans,” they added. The paper suggests that without constraints in fiscal spending, rate hikes will make the cost of debt more expensive and drive inflation expectations higher.…

    More About “The Recycling Man”:
In a poor and overpopulated, yet lonely suburban neighborhood, Jacob, a boy immobilized in a wheelchair, fights boredom by spying on his neighbors across the courtyard, while his mother, Valery, aggressively tries to convince Maria, her pregnant best friend, to have an abortion. Sarah, a girl of Jacob’s age, spots the spying boy out and says hello with a piece of paper. The new friendship is, however, suddenly interrupted when a menacing garbage man approaches Sarah and attacks her from behind with a screwdriver. Jacob, even though he is stuck in his chair, will try everything to alert his mother. Valery, through Jacob’s binoculars, sees the garbage man killing the little girl, but she tells Jacob that nothing important is happening. It really seems as if Valery doesn’t really care about it and she’s far more interested in Maria, and her baby’s fate. Why does she care so much about whether her friend will abort the pregnancy or not? And has Jacob really witnessed murder with his binoculars, or is he just incapable of seeing the whole picture?

  39. Cardimona says:

Last Saturday, the Gold Coast Bulletin became the first daily paper to publish my first principles explanation of the impossibility of CO2-warming.

Jim Taylor (GCB, 20/8) has recited alarmist greenhouse dogma verbatim, but it’s wrong – which is why alarmist predictions never eventuate.

We can be sure it’s wrong because in the absence of a testable hypothesis alarmists need accurate predictions. They can’t predict Queensland’s August average temperature in July, much less a global average temperature in several decades’ time.

Therefore, it’s time we all learned some CO2 physics from first principles. There are five immutable laws of physics that allow people to see the political CO2 scam for what it is.

Water vapour is the major “greenhouse” gas, and it leaves few gaps in the infrared spectrum for other gases to have any effect at all.

CO2 mainly absorbs outgoing longwave infrared radiation (heat) as photons at the 14.8 microns wavelength. (Planck’s Law)

The temperature of absorption at 14.8 microns is -80 degrees Celsius. (Wien’s Displacement Law and Kirchhoff’s Law of Thermal Radiation)

Minus 80 degrees Celsius is 95 degrees lower than average surface temperature and is found in the lower stratosphere, well above the troposphere where we live.

Heat doesn’t flow from cold zones to hotter zones. (Second Law of Thermodynamics)

CO2 cannot “trap heat.” It merely delays outgoing infrared photons for a billionth of a second so high up in the atmosphere it’s irrelevant. It releases them at a less energetic frequency, and they continue on to outer space.

Atmospheric CO2 is contingent upon seawater temperature. The hotter equatorial water is, the more CO2 it releases. Cold Arctic and Antarctic waters reabsorb it. (Henry’s Law)

Repeatedly asserting something to be true does not make it true. If it did, all our low-lying coastal towns would have been flooding at each high tide for twelve years now.

    Today I submitted a follow-up piece, so fingers crossed…

In my letter published on Saturday, August 27, I briefly outlined the immutable laws of physics that make global warming from CO2 impossible.

With the forbearance of the editor, I would now like to outline the gob-smacking error that lies at the core of the CO2-warming narrative.

The Earth, as we all know, is a globe that rotates as it orbits the sun. Half of the globe is facing the sun at any time and the other half is facing away. That rotation gives us day and night.

The sun, as we all know, emits a broad spectrum of radiation, which we mostly experience as heat and light. Summer sunlight can be so hot it feels like it has physical weight.

So, as we all know, half the globe is heating in the sun during daylight hours while the other half is cooling during the night.

But that physical reality is absent from the energy balance equations of the alarmists of academia, which includes all the Western world’s universities.

What they perceive as reality will shock you, particularly when you consider the wealth our politicians have squandered and are continuing to squander on this nonsense.

The model Earth the alarmists build their energy balance equations on is a flat disc that receives continual sunlight that yields a surface temperature of minus 40 Celsius.

That’s right, a flat Earth with cold sunlight. The CO2 alarmists are quite literally flat-earthers who appear to have never been outside.

The LNP, ALP, Greens, and Teals recklessly rushing to “decarbonise” Australia are so inexcusably ignorant that they are following cold-sun flat-earth pseudo-science.

The consequences for the people of Australia of the established political parties’ policies are catastrophic and are infinitely worse than the mild warming they claim they want to prevent.

  67. Climate change is the religion of people that think they’re too smart for religion.

Seems to be borne out by experience.

I don’t know whether it is more concerning that this bloke is the PM of Australia or whether the media are so under his spell.

There are serious problems that the residents of this country are facing and this is news? Are they so far removed from reality? A holiday before the first 100 days in the highest office in the land?

As one of the commenters says:

I have held senior executive positions and I have reported to public company boards, but I would never have dared to go on leave in the first year of service, let alone three months after being appointed.

And the bloke dares to criticise PM Morrison for going on a family holiday a year after being appointed to the position…

Anthony Albanese describes week off in Broome

Anthony Albanese and his partner Jodie Haydon went kayaking, attended an art exhibition and dined at a lavish restaurant during the Prime Minister’s first holiday since winning the top job back in May.

Anthony Albanese has recalled his “fantastic” holiday to Western Australia with partner Jodie Haydon – and his security detail.
