EPRs – originally known as European Pressurised Water Reactors – are a type of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR). The design of the UK EPRs that will be built at Hinkley Point C represents a major development on previous PWRs, making them amongst the safest and most efficient civil nuclear power generators ever designed.

The UK EPR design marks significant progress towards sustainability. It has been designed to use less uranium and produce almost a third less long-lived radioactive wastes compared with water reactors in operation today.

Bill Gates says Covid risks have ‘dramatically reduced’ but another pandemic is coming

Bill Gates said Friday that the risks of severe disease from Covid-19 have “dramatically reduced” but another pandemic is all but certain.

Speaking to CNBC’s Hadley Gamble at Germany’s annual Munich Security Conference, Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said that a potential new pandemic would likely stem from a different pathogen to that of the coronavirus family.

But he added that advances in medical technology should help the world do a better job of fighting it — if investments are made now.

“We’ll have another pandemic. It will be a different pathogen next time,” Gates said.

The EPR is a third generation pressurised water reactor design. It has been designed and developed mainly by Framatome (part of Areva between 2001 and 2017) and Électricité de France (EDF) in France, and Siemens in Germany. In Europe this reactor design was called European Pressurised Reactor, and the internationalised name was Evolutionary Power Reactor, but it is now simply named EPR.

The first operational EPR unit was China’s Taishan 1, which started commercial operation in December 2018.[1] Taishan 2 started commercial operation in September 2019.[2] The first EPR unit to start construction, at Olkiluoto in Finland, achieved criticality on 21 December 2021.[3] It is expected to begin commercial operation in mid 2022, a delay of thirteen years. The second EPR unit to start construction, at Flamanville in France, is also facing a costly delay (to 2023).[4] Two units at Hinkley Point in the United Kingdom received final approval in September 2016 and are expected to begin operating in 2026.[5][6]

EDF has acknowledged severe difficulties in building the EPR design. In September 2015, EDF stated that the design of a “New Model” EPR was being worked on, which will be easier and cheaper to build.[7]

Hinkley Point C could be delayed by Chinese nuclear plant fault

The Hinkley Point C project may be delayed after defects were found at a similar reactor in China.

According to The Times, safety components at Hinkley may need to be redesigned following the discovery.

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the problems with the plant in Taishan, in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, which was shut down in August after reports of damage to fuel rods. These hold nuclear materials used to fuel the reactor.

It was first revealed in June that the US government had been assessing reports of a leak at the power station, with gas escaping after the coating on some of the fuel rods deteriorated.

The Commission for Independent Research and Information on Radioactivity, a French association created in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, has now said that a whistleblower reported that a design flaw in the reactor pressure vessel could be the cause of the Taishan problem.

An industry source told The Times that the investigation was likely to show that the pressure vessel was “demonstrably safe” but it might also show that design changes were needed.

The £22bn Hinkley Point C power plant currently has a scheduled date for starting electricity generation of June 2026. Construction is ongoing, with the world’s biggest crane, Big Carl, placing the steel ring onto the second reactor building earlier this month.

The design of Hinkley Point C will also be used for the proposed Sizewell C power station in Suffolk, which is planned but has not yet been approved.

University of Sussex nuclear expert Paul Dorfman said that if reports about the Taishan reactor are correct, “then it’s beginning to look like there’s a potential generic fault with the key safety mechanism of the EPR reactor design itself”.

He added: “If so, this is serious news for ongoing construction at Hinkley Point C and plans for Sizewell C.

“There’s a couple of ‘ifs’ there, but the thing with nuclear is the very limited scope for safety error. We’ve learnt, to our cost, if something goes wrong, picking up the pieces is costly in economic, environmental and human terms.”

A spokesman for EDF’s UK division said: “Inspection work on reactor one at Taishan is still under way. The cause of the issue with a number of fuel rods will not be known until the end of these studies and the findings will benefit future reactor operations, including those in Britain.

“Fuel performance issues are not unusual in nuclear operation and this issue does not pose a risk to people or the environment.”

The spokesman declined to comment on whether the issues at Taishan might delay the start-up of Hinkley Point C.

In conclusion, we show here that a single dose of 5-MeO-DMT can increase proliferation, survivability and accelerate maturation of newborn neurons in the DG. To our knowledge, this work was the first to demonstrate a direct effect of a naturally occurring psychoactive compound in adult neurogenesis. New lines of investigation have suggested that serotoninergic hallucinogens can significantly improve severe depression and anxiety (Reiche et al., 2018). Thus, the effect of 5-MeO-DMT in modulating neurogenesis could throw light on the mechanism behind the beneficial effects of hallucinogenic compounds in mood disorders.

There is a lot of work being done in this area, and most of it producing positive results. I remember (vaguely) a post from DotLord a while back showing LSD use in a time of stress or abnormality in ones life having a prolonged negative effect on mental health.

When someone was upset he’d massage their neck and say simple, comforting things. Been in supported residential care and employment for 30 years. Staff loved him.
Enter the NDIS. Ex-neighbour asking me what to do. Extract from letter written to HIM!
    Dear
ALLEGATION MEETING –Your opportunity to respond to allegations of misconduct have been raised against you and work has an obligation to investigate these matters. The details of these allegations are as noted below.
Allegation On the morning of in the dining roomy you breached the & NDIS Code of Conduct and Workplace Harassment, Discrimination and Bullying Policy when you sexually harassed by the following acts:
a)at approximately 6.30am you kissed on her neck and check, massaged her shoulders and back, and stroked her hair, all without her consent and despite telling you to “leave me alone”.
b)at approximately 6.30am you asked her to move to the back of the hall, but she refused and she stated that this behaviour made her feel unsafe with you as there were very few people in the dining area at that time.
c)At morning tea time, you took hold of hands with both of your hands without asking her permission. When Tracy tried to pull away you continued to hold on with a strong grip but eventually released her hands

    Supporting information:•
CCTV footage showing the following incidents: At 6.26am, you were observed in the video approaching when she was sitting at a table in the dining room. You massaged her shoulders, then leant in and kissed her on the neck and then kissed her again on the cheek. You then moved to other side of table and sat down. At 6.27am, you got up from your seat and moved around to where you rubbed your hand around in circles on back. You then kissed her face and stroked her hair.•
A witness who was in the dining room at that time stated that you were telling her you were going to make her a coffee and she kept telling you she didn’t want one. She told you 5 times “leave me alone”

It goes on with references to legislation. The “victim” has been his “girlfriend” for many years and their relationship has never gone beyond holding hands for a few minutes or a kiss on the cheek.

OK then – This is a breach of Code of Conduct, because you have touched without her permission and also because close contact between workers is not allowed as it does not fit with current COVID-19 guidelines of social distancing:
This is a breach of Workplace Harassment, Discrimination and Bullying Policy, specifically 6. Harassment which states…

Please note that the fact of this investigation and the information outlined in this letter are to be kept strictly confidential. This means you are not permitted to discuss the information disclosed with anyone in the workplace, except for your support person, or any personnel authorised with investigating these allegations. At the conclusion of the investigation and, following consideration of all the available information obtained regarding these matters, the outcome may include disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Last week biological father sacked NDIS service provider for charging $700 (taken from his NDIS package) for taking him out for the morning. They went for a coffee and drove round for a bit.
