There was some news story that resurfaced in recent days about the UNRWA allegations. Here in Australia, the usual section of society is questioning why we are giving funds to UNRWA.
What are the facts?
1/ January 2024
Israel claimed that some staff members of UNRWA were involved in the October 7 attack.
Following the accusations, the UN Secretary-General immediately ordered OIOS to investigate.

2/ April 2024
Israel had not provided any supporting evidence so one of the cases was closed.

3/ August 2024
The UN said on Monday that nine staff working for its Palestine refugee agency UNRWA will be sacked because they may have been involved in the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks against Israel….
However, OIOS was not able to independently authenticate information used by Israel to support the allegations.

Check what this report below says. There is not enough evidence to prove that the UNRWA staff were really involved in the October 7 attacks. But UNRWA is the only agency there to provide the much needed life-saving help to the Palestinians.
So they decided on the “guilty even though not proven” route and sacked the staff members in order that they (UNRWA) can continue to help the Palestinians. I cannot blame them for this decision, under the circumstances.
Yet, the ignorant masses are jumping up and down because Penny Wong has sent funds to UNRWA. Just as many other countries reversed their ban and restarted their funding.
Why bother with facts. UNRWA is an evil agency because Israel said so.

“In one case, no evidence was obtained by OIOS to support the allegations of the staff member’s involvement. That staff member has rejoined the Agency.
“In nine other cases, the evidence obtained by OIOS was insufficient to support the staff members’ involvement and the OIOS investigation of them is now closed.
“For the remaining nine cases, the evidence – if authenticated and corroborated – could indicate that the UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the attacks of 7 October.
“I have decided that in the case of these remaining nine staff members, they cannot work for UNRWA. All contracts of these staff members will be terminated in the interest of the Agency.
“The Agency’s priority is to continue lifesaving and critical services for Palestine Refugees in Gaza and across the region, especially in the face of the ongoing war, the instability and risk of regional escalation.

(And understand better now my own instinctive aversion to the field in general, though I see it pays to know how they try to use it against us.)
